JEE or Joint Entrance Exam is a common entrance examination conducted at all India level for facilitating admissions in different engineering colleges across India. JEE preparation demands the in-depth knowledge of the concepts as it is globally recognized as one of the most challenging engineering entrance examinations at the undergraduate level and every year around 1.5 million students appear for this exam, therefore, JEE preparation requires a smart, systematic and concerted effort. Till 2011, All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) was conducted by CBSE every year. In the year 2012, CBSE has announced the replacement of IIT JEE and AIEEE with Joint Entrance Examination.

  1. The AIEEE was replaced by JEE Mains to facilitate admissions in 31 NITs, 20 IIITs and 18 other CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutes).
  1. IIT JEE was replaced by JEE Advanced to facilitate admissions in the 23 IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) and ISM Dhanbad.

In IIT JEE 2018, around 2,24,000 students from Mains will become eligible to appear for the Advanced level of the examination (IIT JEE). Premier institutes like the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) grant admissions to students on the basis of marks secured in JEE Advanced.

The IIT Council in September 2013 has approved the decision of the Joint Admission board for introducing the two-phase JEE pattern. In 2014, JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) conducted the joint admission process for granting admissions in 23 IITs and ISM-Dhanbad through IIT JEE Advanced and in 18 IIITs, 32 NITs and 19 other GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) through Mains.

In JEE 2013 to 2016 (Mains), 40% of weight age was given to the marks scored in class 12th board examinations in calculating the All India ranks. However, all such criteria were discontinued from JEE Mains 2017 onwards. Also, CBSE has made mandatory for students applying for IIT JEE to register with the Aadhar card from the year 2017 onwards.

JEE 2018

This year around 1.15 million students have registered for JEE 2018 (mains). This figure is slightly less than that of the last year (1.98 million students). Also, the number of students appearing for JEE Mains online paper has considerably risen. The examination will be conducted offline on 8th of April 2017 and online on 15th and 16th of April 2018.

JEE 2018

The students who clear the prescribed cut-off marks of IIT JEE (Mains) will be eligible to take the Advanced level of the examination. There is a considerable increase in the number of students appearing in JEE Advanced from the year 2015 to 2017.

IIT JEE Phase 1 and Phase 2

The first phase of JEE is Mains (Paper 1 and Paper 2) and is conducted by CBSE for facilitating admission in various undergraduate courses offered at NITs, IIITs, DTU and the other central and state-funded institutes. The courses offered by these institutes are B.Tech/B.E., Integrated MSc, B.Arch/B.Planning courses etc.

JEE 2018 Paper 1 (Mains)

  1. Engineering Entrance Exam for B.Tech/B.E courses.
  2. The time duration of examination is 3 hours.
  3. There are objective type questions from Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics.
  4. The students are awarded 4 marks for every correct answer, however, 1 mark is deducted in case of an incorrect answer.
  5. Both online and offline mode of examination is available.

JEE 2018 Paper 2 (Mains)

  1. Architecture Entrance Exam for B.Arch/B.Planning courses.
  2. There is only the offline mode of examination and the time duration of exam is 3 hours.
  3. There are objective type questions from Mathematics (Part 1) and Aptitude Test (Part 2).
  4. In Part 1 and Part 2 the students are awarded 4 marks for every correct answer, however, 1 mark is deducted in case of an incorrect answer.
  5. Part 3 is a Drawing Test and there is no negative marking in this section.

The second phase of IIT JEE (Advanced) is conducted by IITs on a rotation basis. IIT Kanpur will conduct Advanced 2018 examination (Online Mode) on May 20th, 2018. Several prestigious institutes like IITs and ISM Dhanbad grant admissions only on the basis of ranks obtained in Advanced. In IIT JEE 2018, only those students who will clear the prescribed cutoff marks of mains will be eligible to appear for Advanced.

JEE preparation demands a dedicated and timed study roaster so that the students can give equal attention to each and every topic included in JEE Syllabus. The questions asked in Mains examination are mostly taken directly from the concepts taught in NCERT textbooks. Also, 30% of questions asked in Mains demand less level of thinking, logic, and dedication for aiming an average score of around 200 marks, however, in the case of JEE Advanced, it requires more logic, dedication, and hard work to secure a meritorious position in the examination. The students are advised to have a deep knowledge about the subjects for getting admissions in top IITs and NITs.
