The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) is a group of fifteen autonomous engineering and technology oriented institute of higher education, established and declared as Institute of National Importance by the government of India. Each IIT is an autonomous university, linked to the others through a common IIT Council, which keeps a vigilance on their administration. They have a common admission process for undergraduate courses, using the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
The admissions to the undergraduate programs for Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU), Varanasi and Indian School of Mines University (ISMU), Dhanbad are also made through JEE.
The Extended Merit List (EML) of IIT-JEE is the list of candidates drawn up with some further relaxation in the aggregate cut-off beyond the cut-off of the JEE common merit list. The EML qualified students are eligible for admissions in Institutions like Indian Institute of Space Technology (IIST) at Bangalore; Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) at Pune, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram, Bhopal and Mohali; Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGPIT) Noida and Indian Institute of Maritime Studies (Merchant Navy) at Mumbai and Kolkata.
